Star Gaze is a London-based artist specialising in fibre arts, drawing and photography.
Immersed in London’s fast-paced drag and cabaret subculture, I became enamoured with photography as a method of archiving the fleeting ephemerality of performance and documenting the stories, people and places that make up the scene. Using the visual language of theatre, I play with gender as performance, examining the constructed binaries imposed upon the queer/trans body and how these are subverted.
My textiles work combines the archive of my own experience with queer historical materials, collapsing the perceived divide between ‘then’ and ‘now’ to reveal the continuity of queer life, resistance and joy across time. Fabric becomes the site of community-building, storytelling and alternative record-making; a medium capable of holding memory, intimacy and collective histories often excluded from institutional narratives.
